Success Stories

Supported by Belun, English classes for children have been run from the Balibo Community Learning Centre. The aim of the English classes is to improve the children’s skills in spelling, writing, reading and counting in English, giving them an advantage before they move to primary school. Running for 3 months, 25 local children have graduated so far. A second module has been developed, and is being run between April and June 2013.

The Balibo Community Learning Centre has also helped to set up a new market for local produce, and supported the establishment of women’s cooperatives to bring local produce to market.

Management training in finance and administration, funding proposal writing and reporting were all provided to improve the Balibo Community Learning Centre’s management team’s capacity to carry out daily activities and secure their future. Through Belun’s work, the Balibo Community Learning Centre is now able to run education programs and seek and obtain grants from donors. They have already commenced this by applying to the UNDP for an environmental project grant.
